Alarming Child Abuse Statistics (And How You Can Take Action)

Updated: Apr 29, 2022

Child abuse is a prevalent problem in our country and in our local community, and something we are working to put an end to at The Dragonfly House Children’s Advocacy Center. The following statistics from dosomething.org are a big reason why we continue to pursue our mission of ending child abuse so ardently:

  • During the past year, approximately one out of every seven children in the U.S. experienced some form of abuse or neglect.

  • Both boys and girls are at risk for similar rates of child abuse (48.6% for boys and 51% for girls).

  • Children under the age of one are the most at risk for maltreatment, and they account for nearly half of all child fatalities that result from abuse.

  • Approximately 62% of children put in foster care in 2018 were removed from their homes because of abusive neglect. This came out to be over 160,000 children.

  • Victims of abuse during childhood are more likely to experience mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and substance abuse disorders, into adulthood.

Understanding that child abuse is an extensive issue here in our community and across the U.S. is the first step towards putting an end to this pervasive problem. Getting involved is another way you can help put an end to child abuse and help victims of it in your local community.

At our children’s advocacy center, we provide all the resources victims of child abuse need to recover and move forward all under one roof. We welcome all donations of time, talents, and money, so if you want to help children in your local community, consider donating to our organization today.
